About Responsible Tourism

ETC defines Responsible Tourism as "educational travel with a priority focus on the positive economic impacts travel can have on places visited, while minimizing the ecological, social and cultural impacts through the pursuit of service and volunteerism, engagement with the local community, traveler philanthropy and stewardship of the environment."

As part of the Educational Travel Community's commitment to advancing responsible tourism, ETC hosts an annual Responsible Tourism Showcase to recognize the efforts of ETC members and their partners working diligently in the field to develop and implement responsible tourism initiatives.

The Responsible Tourism Showcase is part of the annual ETC conference, where a variety of educational sessions and roundtable discussions are held on current Responsible Tourism issues and best practices. One exciting outcome of ETC 2004 was a commitment by delegates to donate funds to the Showcase. If you wish to donate matching funds to the Responsible Tourism Honoree awards, please email registrar@travelearning.com. Thank you.

Silent Charity Auction

Maasai PaintingThe Educational Travel Conference incorporates the Silent Charity Auction each year to help raise funds for the Responsible Tourism Showcase. Items have ranged from books to shawls to sculpture to a tented safari--and much more! Find out how you can support this event at ETC 2017.

We regret to share the news that Songwe Village experienced a terrible brush fire in September 2008. No one was hurt, but sadly Songwe was burned to the ground and ETC has not been informed of any plans to rebuild it.
